NEL Council’s mobile phone bill for staff tops £400,000
That is the view of bosses at North East Lincolnshire Council who say spending on mobiles has been put under the spotlight and reduced in the last 12 months as part of a raft of cost-cutting measures.
The Grimsby Telegraph can today reveal that £195,000 was spent providing mobile phones to 1,121 of the council’s 6,443 staff during the last financial year.
The amount has fallen by £14,000 since 2008/09 when £209,000 of taxpayers’ money was spent on mobile phones.
It means the average worker has racked up monthly bills of just £15 over the last two years, the results of a Freedom of Information request show.
And council leaders were today united in the view that spending on mobile phones for staff is a “necessity.”
Councillor Andrew DeFreitas said spending on mobile phones is under constant review.
“These are the kind of expenses which we have to keep a close eye on and ensure that we are getting the best value for money we can,” he said.
“Spending on mobiles has fallen dramatically in the last financial year and we will continue to review the contracts and providers we are using to get the best deal.”
