PRESS RELEASE
Date: 16th August 2011
At mass meetings held last week, UNISON members employed by North East Lincolnshire Council overwhelmingly rejected the Councils' latest proposals for cuts to terms and conditions. This was backed up by a 93% vote in favour of industrial action.
Initial proposals for cuts were tabled before Christmas and subsequently modified in March this year. These earlier sets of proposals were also overwhelmingly rejected by UNISON members.
The latest proposals include some improvements, including the complete removal of a few from the table. However, with the addition of completely new proposals and the retention of some of the hardest hitting, this has not been anything like enough to satisfy members. The latest set of proposals seems to have hardened the opposition of members, with an even greater percentage in favour of industrial action than was the case in March.
Dave Tomlinson, Assistant Branch Secretary, said:
"It's hardly surprising that when having to deal with no pay increase for two years and inflation of basic essentials running at above 5% coupled with proposals to increase pension contributions by 3% whilst having to work longer for a smaller pension and threats to jobs and services in the public sector; etc that members reach the point of saying enough is enough."
Local Government workers are already the lowest paid and on the worst terms and conditions of any public sector workers. NELC's proposed cuts to terms and conditions, combined with the Car Parking Charge, would have a devastating effect on many members and their families and dependants. Loss of jobs and reduction in income will also affect the local economy. The vast majority of NELC employees are also residents of North East Lincolnshire so will also be affected by the negative impact on public services that the coalition government's cutting spree will have.
The proposals include cuts to Annual Leave entitlement, reduced mileage allowance, cuts to car allowances and a 50% cut in protection payments for those downgraded. Separate from these cuts, staff face new Car Parking Charges of 1% of salary from 1st September.
UNISON's formal response to the proposals will be tabled at a meeting with Elected Members and Senior Council Officers on 24 August.
