BBC NEWS | England | Humber | Name change for local authority.
The council is looking to change its name
|
A local authority could be renamed in an effort to tackle the area’s “identity crisis”.
Council bosses want to scrap North East Lincolnshire Council and replace it with Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes Borough Council.
It is hoped the new name would place the area more firmly on the map.
Council leader Andrew De Freitas said: “We have suffered from an identity crisis since the creation of the North East Lincolnshire authority.”
He said he felt residents and businesses had struggled with the local authority’s name, which was created in 1996 following the break-up of Humberside County Council.
Deputy council leader Keith Brookes said: “When speaking to people in other areas of the country I have found that while they have heard of Grimsby, Immingham and Cleethorpes, they do not know they are in North East Lincolnshire, and this is something we need to address.”
A council report will examine the likely cost of changing the name and, if approved, people will get to put forward their suggestions.
